<< BackLocal Alumna Hosts Book Signing Event
Local alumna Judy Zhu (CI '02) is a tenured professor at the Defense Language Institute by day, and author by night. Modern Chinese Cultural Cultural Encounters Volume 1: Studying & Traveling in China is Judy's most recent work. The book aims to provide those studying or traveling in China with a perspective and a reference.
Judy states, " Although we may say that all Chinese people in China share certain values, beliefs and characteristics, it is important to acknowledge that there can be significant difference in how these are exhibited in different regions, situations, or people, because there are many subcultures within the Chinese culture. My own particular background as a Beijing native undoubtedly affects my outlook. This book presents the Chinese experience largely from the Beijing perspective, which is generally considered to be one of the mainstream cultures in China."
Judy began publishing her Chinese works at the age of 14. Her pen names include Jasmine, Shuishan and Suxin. Before she came to the U.S. for graduate school in her late 20s, she had won numerous literature awards in China, and her 300+ poems, prose and stories were published in eight books as well as various newspapers and magazines. She was also an invited part-time columnist for Teda Times when she worked at the U.S. Embassy in China. At the Defense Language Institute, Judy is a three-time Teaching Excellence Award recipient. She is passionate about teaching and always strives to serve as a bridge for Sino-U.S. communications. More information can be found about Judy at www.chinese-consultant.com.
Alumni in the Monterey Bay area can join Judy at Borders Express, 222 Del Monte Shopping Center, on Saturday, August 29th, from 2:00- 4:00 p.m. for a book signing event. The event will include a Chinese cultural encounter quiz, and a chance to learn ten key Chinese survival phrases, just in time for that upcoming trip!
Congratulations Judy!
